When a person joins Facebook, they have a personal profile. When a business or organization joins Facebook, they have a Fan Page or Group. Many times, I've seen businesses make the mistake of creating a personal profile for their business. Most of the time, it's because they didn't even know that there is a different "spot" for businesses on Facebook.
If you're looking to create a presence on Facebook to begin seeking all the benefits of the interactions, increased website traffic, personal connections, advanced tools, etc., then you need to understand "which type" of page you need to create. There are hundreds of social media sites, with more being born every day. The changing nature of online technologies means a new tool may already be popular since the writing of this article! It is hard to say what will happen next because no one can plan or regulate social media. However, there are three places that every business should explore using today: LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.
LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a social networking tool for professionals. Some businesses today are training their employees to use LinkedIn to increase their personal networks and business opportunities. It is the “new rolodex,” helping professionals stay connected as people move from job to job. It’s also a great way to connect with others to ask questions and advice, poll your target audience, share your experiences and post news about your business or industry.

Social media is not a fad that will simply fade away in a year or two. With the plethora of Web 2.0 tools and technologies, social media has become the new way of marketing. Businesses that don’t join in will miss important opportunities to engage in conversations, find new customers and promote their brand.
